Super Secret Show in San Francisco

Green Day held a super secret show in San Francisco on April 9th, at the DNA lounge, a small 500-person venue. Tickets went on sale the day before exclusively for Idiot Club members (another reason to sign up) and sold out within a couple of hours. They played for over 2 hours! They started off with Welcome to Paradise, then played the entire songlist from 21st Century Breakdown, and finished off with a mixture of older songs, including some rarities like “Who Wrote Holden Caulfield”. Here are some impressions from people who were at the show:

Shay Quillen from Mercury News:

After more than an hour of unfamiliar music, the crowd exploded when, after a three-minute break, the band launched into “American Idiot,” which was followed by a few more from that blockbuster concept album. (After “Novocaine,” Armstrong happily proclaimed “That’s the best we’ve played that song in three years!”) Then Armstrong opened up the floor for requests, starting with “Burnout,” the opening cut from the band’s breakthrough “Dookie” CD, one of the few songs performed by the basic three-piece lineup. [...]

The whole shebang wrapped up with “Minority” and a roomful of happy people who couldn’t believe they just saw one of the biggest bands in the world for $20 at a local club.

Melissa Goldstein from Spin on Billy’s attitude towards camera phones:

While the night was clearly OMFG! photo-op-tastic, Armstrong kept the shutterbugs restrained: After inviting concertgoers to give it their best “shot” with their cellphone cameras at the show’s outset, he then asked everyone to “put the fucking things away.”

The rumors are that Green Day will continue to do the same, play super secret shows and just do some “band practice”. If you want to possibly catch on of the shows, I would recommend joining the Idiot Club. Stay tuned for more.
